Sister M. Malachy Hannigan, born in Donegal, Ireland on December 4, 1906 and a member of the Sisters of the Holy Family for 76 years, died at the Motherhouse of the Sisters in Fremont, California on March 16, 2010 at the age of 103.
Sister’s early years of Home/Kitchen Ministry in San Francisco at the Hayes Street Convent included the preparation of lunches for anyone who appeared at the Convent door, and providing clothing to those in need. Sister Malachy was well known at Laguna Honda Home in her ministry to the elderly and was a regular volunteer at St. Anthony’s Dining Room for several years until her retirement to the Motherhouse in 2002. In 1971, “Sister Malachy’s Pastry Cookbook” was published and released again in 2003 highlighting Sister’s favorite recipes.
Sister Malachy is survived by a niece and nephew.
A Mass of Christian Resurrection will be celebrated at the Motherhouse Chapel, 159 Washington Blvd., Fremont, California on Friday, March 19, 2010 at 10:30 am. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California following the Mass.
